(UK) MONUMENT 45 rpm Singles
1967-1970

This is a hitherto unpublished list, originally compiled by Paul Pelletier in the early 1990s, here updated. As a licensed label, Monument left its mark on Decca's London(-American) label in the 1960s with the very successful hit-maker Roy Orbison. Hits became a lot harder to find when Orbison signed with MGM in 1965, although it was specifically written into the MGM contract that his UK outlet remained with London in acknowledgement of the contribution the label had made in his success. Regardless, and with an internationally weak roster, in 1967 Monument decided to release under its own logo in Britain, but stayed within the Decca Group for pressing and distribution.

Over a four year period, 51 singles were issued; as shown in the far right-hand column, some came from the Monument subsidiary Sound Stage 7, also from Rising Sons. It appears that Rising Sons was owned by Buzz Cason and Mac Gayden, but it is not clear what the precise relationship between it and Monument was, nor should it be confused with Arlo Guthrie's label which started in 1983. From 1971, Monument moved its British operation to CBS.

The duplication of "The Minority" as the B-side to two Ray Stevens singles, 1039 & 1047, needs resolving. The song came from the 1968 album "Even Stevens" and at over three-and-a-half minutes, it was long for a conventional single release. However, per a YouTube entry, the original American single did feature this full-length version. The second UK release on MON 1047 has a different matrix from the first on MON 1039 - was either of these versions shortened for UK issue, perhaps, to promote radio play? In the Decca trade catalogue up to September 1971, both singles were still available.

     Any additional information is welcome.
