(UK) NOVA (DECCA & DERAM) LPs
1970

A basic Nova LP listing was compiled by Paul Pelletier in the mid-1990s as part of the Deram LP listing but never published. Below is an updated version. In 1970, Decca's Nova LP series was launched to showcase promising new acts, with a slant toward the avant-garde; however, whoever came up with the idea clearly had not really thought it through because it issued records on both Decca Nova and Deram Nova labels - all very confusing and achieving nothing which existing album series could not have handled. Even sillier, the last releases dropped any mention of "Nova" altogether. Within a year, the label was ended and the status quo restored.

It has been suggested that the final release, featuring the boys' choir from a Roman Catholic boarding school, is the rarest of all Deram albums. Maybe it is but it certainly ranks as the most pointless - this religious material belonged on a Decca classical series and dumping it here looks crass. It really sums up the whole Nova project - ill-conceived.

Internet sources consistently show Nova as having started in 1969, based on the performance dates shown on the first batch of albums. The sole purpose of performance dates is to establish a starting year for duration (the length of time a recording is protected) under copyright law. Release dates shown here are the official ones, backed up by other sources, but it does seem likely that the intention was to launch Nova at the end of 1969 and the artwork was prepared, including labels, to reflect that. The run-up to Christmas was not the best time to launch a new label (it risked being lost in the seasonal throng) so it can be surmised that the launch was delayed until the start of 1970.

The "R" suffix shown on some catalogue numbers was a standard Decca code from this period and stood for "Restricted", meaning that the album could not be exported to certain countries, presumably where the artist / production company had made other contractual arrangements for release.

Clément Saintier has sent this link http://www.allmusic.com/artist/sunforest-mn0001192507/biography regarding the Sunforest album on SDN / DN 7. The interesting article suggests that Nova was Decca's response to EMI's perceived success with their new Harvest label; the article also indicates that signing an unknown act like Sunforest and rushing ahead with an album release was an act of desperation, another sign that the whole Nova project was folly from start to finish.

     Any additional information is welcome.
